If You Wanna Be a Producer, Stage Coach Players is the Place to Go this March!

DEKALB, ILL, March 2, 2021 – Stage Coach Players (SCP) shows how they can do it when it produces the smash Broadway musical from Mel Brooks, The Producers later this month.  The hilarious stage version of Brooks’ 1967 cult film runs at Stage Coach Players from March 24 through April 3, 2022

The first mainstage production in Stage Coach Players’ 75th year of producing plays, The Producers is directed by Scott Montavon who last directed The Red Velvet Cake Wars last season.  Judy O’Connor music directs while Sammie Wootton is choreographing the play. The laugh-out-loud musical follows down on his luck Broadway producer Max Bialystock who after producing several Broadway flops, comes up with a get rich quick scheme that involves producing the biggest flop on Broadway and his reluctant accountant Leo Bloom.

After securing the worst play and director they can find, they raise a couple million dollars and believe that that combination will ensure that the musical will close early, leaving each with a lot of money.  However, the plan doesn’t go as planned when the actor playing Hitler is injured and must be replaced by the director, whose performance leads critics to believe the play is meant to be campy satire.  They love it!

The Producers opened on Broadway in April of 2001 at the St. James Theatre, running for more than six years.  It starred Nathan Lane as Bialystock and Matthew Broderick as Leo Bloom.  It broke the record for Tony Award wins by garnering a dozen including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Actor in a Musical for Lane.  It also won ten Drama Desk Awards that same year.  In 2005, The Producers was adapted to film.

Songs in the production include The King of Broadway, When You Got It, Flaunt It, Keep It Gay, and Where Did We Go Right?  To listen to some the songs from the show, The Producers soundtrack can be found on Spotify and some songs are on YouTube.
