Stage Coach Players Offers a Comedy within a Family Reunion

DEKALB, ILL, Sept. 1, 2021 – Stage Coach Players (SCP) will be presenting the deliciously funny comedy, The Red Velvet Cake War.  It’s a comedy about family, and yes, cake.  The play opens Sept. 9, 2021 and runs for two weekends.

Written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten, The Red Velvet Cake War takes place in Sweetgum, Texas where the Verdeen family is celebrating a family reunion.  The three cousins who live in Sweetgum have been delighting the locals with their outrageous antics for years.

The Red Velvet Cake War is directed by Scott Montavon, who last directed Young Frankenstein in 2017.  Leigh Foulk is assistant director.  The cast includes Gloria Dennison, Mike Groark, Bri Kness, Mike Mattingly, Bonnie Miller, Donna O’Hagan, Amanda Smothers, Chris Swedberg, Wendy Tritt, and Lindsey Valenzuela.

The play has become a recipe for happiness for those in the cast.  Kness, who plays Peaches Verdeen Belrose, said of the show, “It has been exactly what I needed after this past year.  A perfect blend of comfortable friends I’ve worked with before and new people I’m happy to add to my life.”  She added, “This cast has become family, no acting required.”

“I’m so happy to be working with everyone again!”  Tritt said.  She plays Gaynelle Verdeen Bodeen.  “The chemistry between me, Bri and Bonnie is so great – it felt like we were actually family from the very first rehearsal.”

“We have a funny script along with a deeply funny cast,” Montavon offered of the production.  “We have not had a single night where we have not cracked each other up.”

As for what the audience should expect of the humor, Montavon added, “It’s like mixing an episode of the old Carol Burnett Show with an episode of Cops.  Then drop it into rural Texas.”

During the run of The Red Velvet Cake War, SCP will be collecting non-perishable food for Kody’s Cupboard at Kishwaukee College.  No glass bottles or jars, please.  Patrons are encouraged to bring donations to the theatre prior to the performance from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m..  A shopping cart will be located near the theatre entrance.
