The Bottom Brothers Attempt to One-Up Shakespeare in the New Musical Comedy, “Something Rotten!”

DEKALB, ILL, May 18, 2022 – Stage Coach Players (SCP) brings the smash Tony winning musical, Something Rotten! all the way from 1595 London to DeKalb.  The hilarious musical follows Nick and Nigel Bottom, as they struggle to find success during the Elizabethan Renaissance when their contemporary, William Shakespeare, ruled the stage.  The completely original Something Rotten! opens on June 9, 2022, and runs for two weekends at Stage Coach Players’ Theater in DeKalb.

Something Rotten! was created by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick, and successful screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell and will be directed by Jan Kuntz, with musical direction from John Feken the same team that directed Elf last December.  Something Rotten! is jam-packed with musical theater references and show-stopping moments!

The Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel, have spent years unsuccessfully trying to find their way out of the large shadow of William Shakespeare’s theatrical dominance.  Shakespeare is seen as a ‘rock star’ in the 1590’s.  When Nostrodamus, a local soothsayer foretells the that future of theatre will involve singing and dancing, the brothers resign themselves to pen the world’s first musical.

Opening on Broadway at the St. James Theatre on April 22, 2015, Something Rotten! wowed audiences from the first number.   It went on to garner nine Tony Award nominations with a lone win for Christian Borle as Best Featured Actor in a Musical as Shakespeare.

Something Rotten!  features wildly entertaining song and dance while bringing over-the-top characters to life that will have audiences laughing with delight and wanting more when the final curtain falls.  Songs in the production include “Welcome to the Renaissance,” “God, I Hate Shakespeare,” “Hard to Be the Bard,” and “To Thine Own Self.”  The original cast recording can be found on Spotify or individual songs are on YouTube.
